The retail trade sales rose by 2.9% in January


Sales of retail goods at current prices increased by 2.9% in January over the same month last year and employment in the sector made 1.6%, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). At constant prices-discounting the effect of inflation, retail sales fell 1.6% in January over the same month of 2007.
The increase in retail turnover at current prices was mainly due to sales on food, which rose 6.6%, personal equipment, with an increase of 3.8%, other goods, 1.7%, and remaining 1%. While sales of household equipment fell by 3.5%.
If it eliminates the calendar effect (the difference in the number of working days that shows a month in different years), the index of retail trade at current prices increased by 2.1% at constant prices decreased by 2.4%.
Sales in supermarkets at current Barcelona hotels prices grew 3.3% in January (2.7% corrected the calendar effect), due to an increase of 7% in sales of food and 1.9% in the rest.
In real terms, sales in these establishments fell 1.2% (1.8% adjusted the calendar effect), by the fall of 1.4% in sales of non-food products, while food rose 0, 4%.
